After finishing the ongoing Global T20 tournament in Canada, Brendon McCullum will retire from all forms of cricket. The former New Zealand captain made the announcement on Monday.
McCullum is currently playing for the Toronto Nationals in the GT20 tournament in Canada, and after the tournament ends on 11 August, he will quit from all cricket.
He was selected as an icon player for the Glasgow Giants in the inaugural Euro T20 Slam, starting from the 30 August, but after this announcement he will not be seen on the green carpet anymore.
“As much as I’m proud of what I’ve achieved in my 20 years professional career – more than I ever could have dreamed of when I first entered the game – I have felt the drive to keep going, harder to maintain in recent months.
“My style of cricket has always been full noise, full throttle. From Culling Park to Lord’s and everything in between, there have been some wonderful memories. Unfortunately, the sacrifices needed and commitment required to play that type of cricket have now become too great,” McCullum said in a statement which he posted on his social media accounts.
McCullum started his career in 2004 and retired from all international cricket in 2016. During his international cricket career, he played 101 Tests, 260 ODIs and 71 T20I for New Zealand.
After his retirement from international cricket he continued his journey playing in the franchise league. In IPL he played for the Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
In the Big Bash League, he played for Brisbane Heat, in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) for Rangpur Riders, in PSL for Lahore Qalandars and in CPL for Trinbago Knight Riders.
“I am sad to leave playing the game I love behind, but I am excited about what the future holds. It’s been one hell of a ride but I’ve always maintained that all good things must come to an end,” McCullum said.
“The next chapter, both in media and coaching, will challenge me further,” he added.
Apart from international cricket, McCullum played 370 T20 matches scoring 9922 runs and made 7 centuries and 55 fifties.
