Russia annexed the territory of Crimea from Ukraine in March 2014. This happened after a plebiscite that was termed illicit by the international community. The vote has been arranged briskly after the Russian troops took control of many important locations around the peninsula. Volodymyr Zelensky the President of Ukraine has addressed in a video for Crimea without mentioning anything directly about the explosions.
A person died after the blasts had rocked a military base in Crimea. Sergei Aksyonov the Russian politician wrote on social media that the blasts have been conducted at the Saky Military Base. It is near Novofedorivka on the western coast of the peninsula. Social media footage shows that there had been multiple explosions. Russia’s defense ministry exclaims that the ammunition was ignited, though this was not separately verified. The ministry is also of the opinion that there was no impact of the fire on the storage area kept for ammunition.
A video that came explained to its visitors that smoke came from the background as Crimea is a popular destination with many Russian tourists. The local witnesses are claiming that there had been 12 blasts that they had heard starting from 15:20 local time which is 12:20 GMT. Mykhailo Podolyak, the Presidential advisor of Ukraine said that Kyiv was not to hold responsible for the explosions. A Facebook post by the military of Ukraine suggested the Moskva warship sinking and the other military setbacks. This reminded Russia of its fire safety rules as well as the ban on smoking in unsettled places.
Volodymyr Zelensky said Crimea is Ukraine’s and we will never give it up, in a video posted on social media. He thinks that the war must end in Crimea as it began in Crimea with its liberation. He believes that Ukraine is capable of taking back the peninsular before the war ends. 24 February 2022 Russia launched an invasion in Ukraine using Crimea as the center to enforce Russian troops deep into Ukraine. The port of Sevastopol in the north is 50 km from Novofedorivka and Saky which is the home of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. This is leading to the blockade of the Ukrainian coastline.
