Being Frank Gardener: When Life Takes a Sudden Turn

A Documentary by Frank Gardener was a Reminder That we can Never Take the Simplest Things in Life for Granted. Adam Humphreys reports.

Last month I watched a TV documentary called Being Frank Gardener. As you can gather it was to do with BBC reporter Frank Gardener who, after a life-changing incident, suddenly had to adapt to life without the usage of his legs.

During the episode, he tells us of the fateful day he was doing some reporting in the Middle East, in an area that was rife with danger. He drove with the camera crew. Shortly afterward they were attacked by members of Al Qaida who shot Frank six times. The majority of those gun-shots left him clinging to his life, and when he recovered, he discovered that his life had been changed forever.

Ironically, he is not the only one to have suffered life-changing injuries which resulted in him having to readjust to life. Katie Piper, Activist, writer, and TV presenter suffered horrific injuries 12 years ago when she became a victim of a vicious acid attack back in 2008 when her ex-boyfriend arranged for acid to be thrown at her. It left her with visible scarring across her face, she was also left blind in one eye.

Going back a bit further now, British actor, Tim Curry, the original Dr. Frank-N-Furter (ask your mum and dad) enjoyed a full acting career up until 2012. This has also had a pro-founding impact on his acting career as it has limited what he is able to do. However, he did make an appearance in Rocky Horror Picture Show remake; Let’s Do The Time Warp Again, as The Criminologist/Narrator, for which he was in a wheelchair for all of his scenes.

Going back even further now. American actor, Christopher Reeve, the original film Superman (once again, ask your mum, dad and grandparents). In 1995 Christopher was involved in a horse-riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down, and his injuries were that severe that he had to rely on a ventilator for breathing. Though he did manage to make some sort of progress with his recovery he was still left unable to walk and do many things for himself.

When it comes to living out our lives there are a great many who are left with life-changing injuries resulting in life-long disabilities. These can be the result of illness, injury, attack, and/or degenerative conditions where the body suddenly or gradually loses its ability to perform the most basic of functions. Basically, just imagine suddenly losing the ability to walk after an accident.

Like with Frank, Katie, Tim and Christopher, these are just a few examples of people who led, or were leading life to their fullest till one single moment changed everything for them in the space of a few days.
