Barbados to remove Queen as the Head of State

The government of Barbados has announced plans to remove Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state. Ellie Avery reports.

The Caribbean Island aims to have the whole process complete by their Independence Day from Britain in November of next year. This will mark their 55th year of independence from colonialism from Britain.

The Queen is currently Head of State of 15 countries in the Commonwealth. These consist of countries that used to be controlled by the British Empire.

There have been many debates as to if the Queen should even have the jurisdiction to be Head of State of countries that used to be owned by the British Empire.

Many countries were mistreated heavily by the British Empire during the colonialism period and after much criticism and protests, all countries gained independence from Britain.

The government of Barbados has said: “The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind.”

Barbados has a long history with Great Britain dating back to 1625 when it was first in the Empire. Since then, Barbados had been exploited as a site for slavery becayse they are rich in sugar canes.

The Island claimed independence in November 1966 after the colonialism of the British Empire started to decline.
