Bangladeshi archer Diya gets wildcard for athletic contest

Bangladesh archer Diya Siddique is ready to become the youngest contestant to require half within the athletic contest when she gains a wildcard on Monday for this year’s Games in Tokyo.

The International Olympic Committee set to award wildcards to four archers on the rear of promising performances and Diya was one among the recipients there.

The 17-years-old, created her mark at the international stage in May throughout the Archery World Cup Stage 2 in Lausanne, Switzerland where she along with Ruman Shana won silver in the recurve mixed team event.

That was Bangladesh’s first silver medal on the world stage in archery and Bangladesh Archery Federation’s general secretary Kazi Rajib Uddin Ahmed Chapal informed that her performance in that competition prompted World Archery to nominate her name for the Wildcard to the IOC.

Before hearing the news of her wildcard, Diya got eliminated from the Final Qualifiers in Paris after losing to 23rd seed Ana Umer of Slovenia in a tie-breaker by 5-6 set points.

Earlier, she defeated 62nd seeded Leithold Florencia of Argentina by 6-0 set points in the second round. Diya is overall the sixth athlete from Bangladesh set to take part in the showcase event, scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8.

Diya, also the fifth athlete after swimmers Junaina Ahmed and Ariful Islam, shooters Abdullah Hel Baki and runner Jahir Rayhan to secure wildcard berths for the Olympics.
