Bir Protik Taramon Bibi died at her residence in Rajibpur upazila of Kurigram aged 62. She breathed her last on 1st December at 1:30 am, her son Abu Taher told our Kurigram correspondent. She was suffering from acute respiratory complications including asthma, her son informed the press. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of valiant freedom fighter Bir Protik Taramon Bibi. In a condolence message, the prime minister recalled with profound respect the outstanding contribution of Taramon Bibi to Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
“Taramon Bibi played a courageous role in resisting the Pakistan occupation
forces with weapons and her contributions to the Liberation War will be
remembered forever,” she said.
The prime minister prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
Bir Protik Taramon Bibi, the brave soul who fought against the Pakistani Army in the Liberation War in her village home in Shankar Madhabpur of the district. She was in Sector 11 under the leadership of sector commander Abu Taher, Bir Uttam. For her courageous role in resisting the Pakistan occupation army with weapons, she was honoured with the Bir Protik title in 1973 by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Government. After independence, there was no trace of her whereabouts. In 1995, a researcher found out where she lived and consequently the women’s organizations brought her to Dhaka. Her story of bravery was soon published. Taramon Bibi was again honoured with the prestigious Bir Protik title 24 years after the war in 1995. On December 19, 1995, the then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia handed Taramon Bibi the award in a simple ceremony. In 2016, the freedom fighter was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital due to severe respiratory and lung diseases. And finally, she died on 1st December 2018.
