Babies Facing "Werewolf Syndrome" in Spain: Wrong Medicine Mix-up

Around 17 babies in Spain have been diagnosed with a rare case of having “Werewolf Syndrome” which is causing sprout dark hair all over their bodies, after taking incorrect medicine mix-up said the health ministry on Wednesday.
The rare condition is known as hypertrichosis that causes abnormal hair growth.
The patients were supposed to get omeprazole which is used to treat minor stomach discomfort but it was contaminated with minoxidil.
The medicine used to treat alopecia and hair loss being sold as heartburn medicine for children but mistakenly put in reflux medicine bottles.
Spain’s Agency for Medicines and Health Products has distinguished a few clumps of what was intended to be omeprazole syrup, and offered to drug stores around Spain by a Malaga-based company, as rather containing the hair-growing compound minoxidil.
“A laboratory that had put this medication in a container that was marked omeprazole and distributed it to pharmacies,” said Health Minister Maria Luisa Carcedo.
Authorities are still investigating how the laboratory like FarmaQuimica Sur made the mistake who is supplier of active ingredients and pharmaceuticals based in the southern city of Malaga.
The incident came out in June when parents noticed their child was having hair all over their body.
The affected children are in the northern region of Cantabria, Andalusia in the south and Valencia in the east. Among them, four affected children in the southern region three babies and a seven-year-old were doing well.
Carcedo said the laboratory had been shut as a safety measure.
