Saturday Special: In Conversation with Josh Pozzi

Josh Pozzi is the latest musical export from Bristol. His passion for music goes back a lifetime and he has been writing songs since he was 10 years old, and after years of fine-tuning his sounds, he found a musical style that suited him and who he was as an artist. Josh dabbles in two musical genres; Trap and Glitch-Hop; the former is a sub-genre of Hip-Hop whereas the latter is a reworking of glitchy sounds and reworked samples, an electronic sound that’s popular with Flume. As a songwriter, Josh reflects on past experiences and uses them as a therapeutic session whenever producing new material. If you want to hear a sample of his music, use the link down the page to check out his single, ‘In My Mind’.

“I just write about past experiences and things that have had an impact in my life really”

Adam Humphries: You have been in the music industry for quite a few years now, what first sparked your interest in embarking on a career in music?

Josh Pozzi: I have always had a passion for making music, I would write songs from the age of ten. But after years of fine-tuning and practicing, I feel that I have found a genre and style that suits me

AH: As a music fan, which artists were you listening to growing up?

JP: I would listen to everything from heavy metal, rap, pop, classical. I could never find just one artist or genre as I wanted to listen to as many things as possible.

AH: And how would you describe your music?

JP: I would probably describe it as alternative pop that’s dark and melancholic with influences from glitch hop and trap, sometimes I’ll do an upbeat song but it’s usually got some moody lyrics.

AH: Would you describe yourself as a multi-instrumentalist?

JP: I wouldn’t call myself a multi-instrumentalist, I can play a lot of instruments when I need to add something to a song, but I’m not good enough to call myself a multi-instrumentalist. I let friends that are way more talented handle the instruments.

AH: Now there’s two genres that you use which a lot of people won’t have heard of before; Glitch Hop and Trap, what are they like and where did they come from as sounds?

JP: So, Glitch Hop is an electronic style that is popular with artists like Flume, it uses lots of glitchy sounds and reworked samples. The trap is a sub-genre of Hip Hop which is one of the most popular genres in mainstream music at the moment. I take influence from both Glitch Hop and Trap to add different layers into my music as I love both styles.

AH: As a songwriter what inspires your song-writing style and what sort of things do you write about?

JP: I just write about past experiences and things that have had an impact on my life really. I don’t actively look for inspiration in songwriting as I like to keep my songs authentic to what I want to express.

AH: Apart from it being something to write about, do you find the process therapeutic as it can also be used as a way of expressing thoughts, life and feelings, etc?

JP: Yeah, I love the process, it’s the only way I have dealt with problems so it’s a really good outlet for me, you can lock yourself away for 10 hours and just focus on music and have no distractions it’s great.

AH: Since March 2020 we’ve been in lockdown due to the current COVID situation, though we’re gradually coming out of it. As it had much of an effect on you as an artist?

JP: Of course, it had the same effect as everyone however I was lucky to have the equipment I needed at home so that I could just keep my head down and focus on writing new music, although it is nice that some rules have been relaxed so I can work with other artists for collaborations as that’s something I missed.

AH: You released an EP last year, To Anyone Listening, what can you tell us about it, to anyone who hasn’t bought a copy yet?

JP: This EP really helped me to talk and bring buried emotions to the surface. I was always wary about discussing these life events as I didn’t want people to think I was attention-seeking. I have come to realize though that I think it’s a topic where I’ve had nearly ten years of this heavy, conservative, ‘keep your emotions suppressed’ attitude put on me that it got to a point where it felt really unnatural to talk about everything openly, so I just hid it. But ‘To Anyone

Listening’ is an escape for me and helps me express my feelings.

It’s available on all online stores and streaming platforms so for anyone who’s interested in checking it out, please go ahead!

AH: So, what else can we expect from you for the rest of 2021 and in 2022?

JP: Because of the lockdown there’s a lot of new music that will be getting released and a lot of gigs, with my next one on the 20th of June at Dare To Bristol.

AH: And where can people listen to your music?

JP: My music can be found on all platforms just by searching Josh Pozzi or by using this link,
