The MAKUP Academy offers exceptional yet affordable training in all aspects of hair and makeup design for film and TV. All students receive personal attention from founder Veronica McAleer, an internationally-acclaimed Makeup Artist, who is still active in the industry and is currently working on the latest film for a famous American film director/producer.
The MAKUP Academy has now been running for 2 years and each year a group of students has successfully completed the challenging 16-week Intensive Set Ready Course. Uniquely, out of each group one student has gone on to win first prize in a NATIONAL competition!
Jessica Southall won first place in both Makeup and Hair in the Fantasy – Star Wars – Category in the 2016 National Makeup Artists Competition (photo above).
By adapting prosthetics that she made during training, Jessica created an amazing character (designing and making her own costume to create a complete look). The judges thought that the standard of her work and attention to detail was outstanding.
Lance Breakwell beat contenders from across the UK to be crowned the nation’s best up-and-coming stylist in “Create the Look 2017”.
Lance wowed the judges and received the most votes from the general public for his submission. As part of his award he received a professional photoshoot experience.
Lance was also mentioned in a recent article by Warpaint magazine:
“A trainee make-up artist at the Birmingham-based MAKUP Academy for Film and Media Make-up studying under Veronica McAleer, Lance impressed the judges and received the most votes for his submissions, taking the Create the Look crown.”
Both students confirmed that Veronica’s training, mentoring and support was key to their success, with Lance commenting:
“Before I started my make-up course I was set on going into special effects (SFX) make-up. I had never used eye shadow before or even attempted any beauty or contemporary looks, but during the 16 weeks at the MAKUP Academy, studying under Veronica McAleer, I learned so many new skills that I’m continuing to develop.”
