Egypt: Top Female Student Takes on Corruption

Softly spoken schoolgirl Mariam Malak has grow to be an unlikely symbol of the battle towards corruption in Egypt soon after scoring the sum total of zero in her ultimate exams.

The 19-year-previous best student, a teacher’s daughter in a small village in the poor southern province of Minya, dreams of getting to be a medical professional like her two brothers. In prior years she aced her exams, and had anticipated a similar consequence in her last year. Now nicknamed the “zero schoolgirl” in the nearby press, Malak had scored 97% in her previous two many years.
But Malak was shocked to locate that she had been failed in her finals, and says her answers had been replaced with someone else’s – obviously not in her handwriting. “Since the results came out I’ve been residing a nightmare,” Malak told AFP soon after coming to Cairo from her residence in southern Egypt. “When I was proven the so-named copy of my solutions, I couldn’t believe my eyes,” she stated. Malak explained she had written web page right after webpage in the exams, and what she was proven consisted of a few lines.

In extremely bureaucratic Egypt with its complicated legal method, demanding rampant corruption or wrongs suffered by the regular citizen can be a formidable task.
