Car rallies are a popular form of entertainment throughout Spain, especially in the southeastern Catalan region. This time more than 130 cars were enrolled in the 20th rally in Coruna, with them all competing for the Galician championship. The rallies are usually a race among amateur drivers on a regular road instead of enclosed in a course, and this race took place on what appeared to be a dirt road outside with no barriers between racers and spectators.

Spanish authorities have not yet said what they believed caused the crash. Police and ambulance services are currently at the scene assisting victims and their families.
