16 Died and Many Injured by Trains Collision in Brahmanbaria

At least 16 passengers were killed and over 100 others injured as two intercity trains collided in Kasba Upazila of Brahmanbaria early Tuesday. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. A lot of blood needed for the injured and the death toll may rise.
Chattogram-bound Udayan Express from Sylhet and Dhaka-bound Turna Nishita from Chattogram collided at Mondobhag Railway Station around 3:00 am, said Md Delwar Hossain, loco shed in-charge of Akhaura Railway Junction.
Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Hayat-Ud-Dowla Khan told, “The accident occurred because the loco masters did not obey the signals.”

Shyamal Kanti Das, officer-in-charge of Akhaura Railway Police Station, said 12 people died on the spot and many others suffered injuries in the train crash. Later, three of the injured died at Brahmanbaria General Hospital.
“The rescue operation was underway. Death toll may rise as many people are still trapped under the damaged coaches,” he added.
Two coaches of Udayan Express were severely damaged. Two relief trains from Akhaura and Laksam railway junctions rushed to the spot and conducting rescue operations till filing the report around 10:30 am.
The collision has suspended rail communication between Dhaka-Noakhali and Chattogram-Sylhet.
Dhaka’s train services with Chattogram also remained suspended for seven hours but the service resumed at 10:25 am after the authority cleared the track, said Railways Ministry information officer Shariful Alam.

Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Masud Ul Alam said: “Nine of the deceased, including five men and four women, died on spot. Others died at different hospitals after the injured passengers were taken there.
“Rescue operation is underway, and we have opened a control room to facilitate the operation.”
Brahmanbaria Fire Service and the Civil Defense control room duty officer Barkatullah said the death toll may rise as the rescue operation progresses.
