10 dead and dozens missing in Tennessee floods

Ten people are dead and at least 30 others are missing in areas of Middle Tennessee after extreme amounts of rainfall created dangerous flooding conditions.

  • In western areas outside Nashville, certain counties experienced rain totals reaching up to a foot with rainfall only having taken place for just six hours. Flood water cuts a path through a corn field along Little Blue Creek Road following heavy rainfall Saturday.
  • Humphreys county sheriff Chris Davis told news outlets more than 30 people have been reported missing. It was not immediately clear how many had lived at Brookside, located about 60 miles (96km) west of Nashville.
  • Two girls who were holding on to a puppy and clinging to a wooden board swept past, far too fast for Klein and other onlookers to go down and grab hold of them.
  • The county, which is about 60 miles (96km) west of Nashville, saw more than 15in of rain, according to the Tennessean, prompting water rescues, road closures, and communications disruptions.
  • National Weather Service meteorologist Krissy Hurley told the newspaper the area had received about 20-25% of its typical annual rainfall in a single morning.

Meanwhile, by Saturday evening, some of the nearly eight feet of water that surrounded the city of Waverly was beginning to recede. Inside the city’s elementary school, local officials discovered that there were at least four feet of flooding in the building.
